Road to NOVA: Like a kick in the teeth

Saturday was Games & Stuff's 300pt Infinity Spec Ops tournament.  The event was my first real tournament outside of the beginner event at Titan.  The players were good and the event was run smoothly and without issues.  I want to thank John for running a great event and G&S for hosting it.

This went the same way as my first 40k tournament.  A hard lesson in humility but a fin lesson at that.  My list is as follows:

 GROUP 1 (Regular: 10/Irregular: 0):

 O-YOROI Lieutenant HMG + Heavy Flamethrower, CrazyKoalas (2) / EXP CCW. (3 | 85)
 ARAGOTO Spitfire / Pistol, Knife. (1.5 | 29)
ASUKA KISARAGI Combi Rifle + Light Flamethrower / Assault Pistol, Knife. (28)
KEISOTSU Paramedic (MediKit) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (12)
 KEISOTSU HMG / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 18)
KEISOTSU Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (9)
KEMPEI (Chain of Command) Combi Rifle / Pistol, CCW, Electric Pulse. (24)
DOMARU Chain Rifle, E/M Grenades / Pistol, EXP CCW. (29)
NINJA Hacker (Hacking Device) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Shock CCW. (0.5 | 48)
TOKUSETSU KOHEI Engineer Combi Rifle, D-Charges / Pistol, Knife. (14)

 5.5 SWC | 296 Points

Game 1 vs Nomads Bakunin (Steve) - Quadrant Control.

I won the WIP roll and choose side.  He gave me first turn.  I picked the side with more cover and better firing lanes for my TAG.  My Aragoto waspciked off by a Hellcat during its Impetuous and I spent an order to prevent Asuka from ding as well.  The game was lopsided after the first round.  He wasted 5+ orders on taking out the TAG but then basically kept me alive enough to prevent me from retreating.  The Domaru did a great job as did the Ninja but that was about it.  Loss 10-0

Game 2 vs Nomads Bakunin (Ryan) - Annihilation

I won sides and was given first turn.  I did well in the first turn taking out a guy and having the TAG absorb a lot of shots.  I managed to get my bonus objective first turn when the TAG got disabled but poor die rolls and not knowing the exact rules on counter hacking made the rest of the game go down hill fast.  He disabled the TAG after killing my engineer and I didn't realize I could counter hack from anywhere on the board.  He pushed forward and just ate up my little troops.  Loss 7-2

Game 3 vs Yu Jing (Can't remember my opponent) - Frontline

The tag earned his points but went down at the end of the opponent's first turn.  The Ninja managed to score the secondary objecting by hacking a Wu Ming and then died because the Wu Ming made all of his armor saves.  The orders I spent on the Wu Ming meant my Aragoto was left to die out in the open.  Loss 10 - 2

I placed dead last.  Wasn't even close.  What does the loser get?  His money back.  To make the loss sting a hell of a lot less, I won the painted army raffle and got an additional $20 bucks.  Wilson from BWG got in the tie for third and got a figure.  He wasn't really pleased with his prize when he saw my loot.

I learned a lot and had a blast.  I plan to play in the Escalation league at Dropzone that is starting soon.  I also plan on writing what I learned in more detail later this week.

Road to NOVA: Malifools with Matt Stanley

Matt Stanley (one of the guys who are running Malifaux at NOVA) gives an interview in the latest Malifools Daily.  He gives a lot of info on what they will be doing at NOVA.  Give it a listen.

Road to NOVA: Practicing and Infinity List Building from the Clueless

I am slowly painting my Yu Jing.  Not because I am sure I am taking them but because I have a pile of Ariadna stacking up (with more on the way) and two Malifuax crews on the way.  I also needed a list for Saturday's tournament.  I have never played a sectoral list yet and decided to do it.  I also want to play with my painted and based TAG.  That means I have to play JSA since it's part of it.  Last requirement is that they be painted.  Not that the tournament requires it but they have a drawing for fully painted army to win prizes.

That brings me to list building.  This week's tournament is easy.  Just three missions (Annihilation, Quadrant Control, and Frontline).  So beat face lists would work.  Although, I think my ISS idea would work much better on Frontline I am set on using the TAG.  Now it's what can I get painted.  Luckily, my JSA force was pretty close to being ready.  I have 7 guys I need to finish painting but that isn't as daunting as it sounds.  As of last night, I have three guys almost to the point where I am painting flesh.

This brings me to list building.  I am prepping a new article on list building must haves.  Using what I received from a friend for Warmachine and I modified for 40k. I hope to have that early next week.  Until them some pics of what I have been working on.

Road to NOVA: The First Steps in a New System

This is the start of this year's journey to NOVA.  Last night, I bought my badge and event tickets.  This is my third NOVA and the first time I will not be participating in the 40k GT.  I will be participating in the Infinity and possibly Malifaux (if scheduling permits).  I am not exactly sure how I feel about making the change.  Infinity and the GT run parallel.  Most of my friends will be in the GT and I will be flying solo playing Infinity.

I was on the fence if I should just trudge and play the GT or should I actually play something I really want to.  The changes for 40k has actually helped me move onward in my transition to Infinity and Malifaux. I didn't mind the arms race that a new codex would bring what killed me was the rate at which things changed.  I have a full time job and I don't like my hobby becoming a full time job.

So I know look at Infinity to full my competitive itch.  I have only played one event and that was a beginners tournament.  Next weekend I will finally be able to get out and play in a real ITS tournament at Games and Stuff.  I have no idea what I want to bring.  It is looking like I will play what is painted to enter the raffle although I have a JSA list that I am missing one mini for but could fix if I can find a HMG.  Not sure but I will post.

Malifaux is the other system I am interested in.  It's just fun and reminds me a lot like Street Fighter.  I love the idea of combos and I love the horror theme behind it.  I am planing to do my best to play at NOVA.  Matt Stanley is one of the guys running it and it should be a good time.

UPDATES: Infinity, Malifaux, Attackwing and Warhammer 40k, Oh My!!

I have had a bust winter so far and not busy in the fun and relaxing way.  That being said, I have been pretty busy in the hobby.  Just not in the ways I want to be.

I haven't got many games in since the holidays.  I think I played one or two teaching games to try out the Warsenal terrain and show some friends the rules but nothing good.  Hopefully, I will be able to get a game this Thursday at Games & Stuff.  I want to play in their February 15th tournament.

I have actually made some painting progress in both terrain and models.  I need to work on what list I am bringing to the 15th and decide what to get done by then but I currently have finished a mess of models and terrain. The Kuang Shi are done and waiting to be sealed.  I plan to work on the Celestial Guard next.  Then maybe my Bao troops and Su-Jian.

I have also been amassing a Ariadna army.  I am really gonna need a bigger house.

Warhammer 40k

I haven't worked on a single model but I did get a game in against the new Tyranids.  I managed to win it pretty convincingly but it wasn't because of my opponent.  He was trying lots of different parts and I just don't think they melded right.  He also had some bad luck in the beginning and lost both Flyrants in turn 1.  I don't think Nids are a bad book.  I just think they are limiting in their builds.

I have been taking a break from 40k.  Playing very sparingly.  Originally, I thought it was because of a bit of overload.  They had been releasing some many thing and it's kinda hard to figure out what they are doing.  Figuring out army lists have been crazy.  After reading Escalation and Stronghold, I have begun to settle back down and look at what I have with some renewed vigor.  I haven't had the urge to paint a model but I do think I will start work on finishing up Farsight and work on my IG.

I played my first game and I have to say I loved it.  I am going to pick up a bunch of new models to paint and work with.

What a surprise there.  I picked up the starter and played a test game against Dave and participated in their Tournament.  I went 2-1 and got second.  The next tournament I went 2-1 and got first.  Pretty fun game.  Can't wait to see more from it.

A bit of nostalgia.  I loved the original and picked up the starter and the expansion packs.

I will be going again this year.  Registering for Infinity and Malifaux.  I will also be participating in the Olympics there under FTGT while heckling FTGT's Trios team.
