Confluence Crusade: Painting Marines

I did some more work on the marines tonight.  Not happy with what I did but not unhappy.  I have the base coat completed on the tabards and I started the first coat of the highlight.  I need some more work.  I am also doing the wings on the chest pieces with a blue outline using a wash then drybrush it with white.  Not sure if it will work but I guess I will find out.

I also tested my magnets.  The jump packs and regular marine backpacks work for the jump infantry.  That way if I want a squad I have 5.  The magnets on the doors of the predator work and I am generally pleased.  I can have an extra rhino or even a razor back if needed.

I have pics below:

Confluence Crusade: Status and other news

I am plodding along.  Last night I assembled the drop pod.  I still have a lot of work to make it look ready but the idea is there.  Below are a few pics:

The Confluence Crusade: The Hobby Side

Putting together this Black Templar army is a new process.  In the past, I bought models because they were Tyranids and I wanted to play a few games.  I played Todd and he stomped me into the dirt.  When the new Tyanids Codex dropped, I started getting back into the game aspect but I wasn't serious.  I just put the cool parts on the models and I threw dice.

I then started looking beyond the Tyranids.  I went for Ultramarines and Grey Knights.  The Ultramarines were far from WYSIWYG but I started really wanting to paint.  The GK was closer to WYSIWYG but not quite.  I did start to get more into the painting side with the GK.

Confluence Crusade WIP: Drop Pod OSL

I am working on doing the interior of the drop pods using the OSL effect.  The current shots are below:

It's not perfect but I'm still learning.

Confluence Crusade

The armies of the Black Templar gather for the Confluence Crusade in order to purge the enemies of the Emperor from were ever they hide in the universe. Corny?  I know but I am really enjoying the project.

Confluence Crusade: Models Interrupted

Work has been kicking my butt and I haven't had a lot of time to post.  I have had time time to work on the Crusade.  The Emperor's Champion will be completed this weekend.

The drop pod should be assembled this weekend.  The airbrush has been a big help.  The Emperor has also been kind enough to grant me great weather tonight to prime the remaining parts on the pod.  Then I have to actually assemble the damn thing.  That I am not looking forward to.

Warmachine: eSorscha - The UBER Solo list and preparing for Steamroller 2012

This is the list I played Wednesday.  It has three of the more hated solo mercs and Joe.

Forward Kommander Sorscha (*6pts)
* Beast-09 (11pts)
* Spriggan (10pts)
* War dog (1pts)
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt (4pts)
Winter Guard Infantry (Leader and 9 Grunts) (6pts)
* Winter Guard Infantry Officer & Standard (2pts)
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution (3pts)
Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich (2pts)
Saxon Orrik (2pts)

The list worked well.  I need to use Eiryss better.  I am too aggressive with Eiryss and need to play her more.

The main issue with this list is that it would suck in the new format.  Two lists are the norm and you can't reuse characters.  Here is what I can transfer to my second list:

Warmachine: Prepping for War-Torn Alliances

Last night was open gaming at Dream Wizards.  I got a rematch of my intro game against Nate (The resident Press Ganger).  It was also my first time playing Mercs.  He played Gorten Grundback.  I played a new list which I have (or will add) to the armies tab.

The game got interesting early when he popped his feat and had my guys move forward 8 inches.  Unfortunately (or fortunately), it blocked his charge lane and he couldn't take out eSorscha.  During eSorscha's turn I was able to do a lot of damage but couldn't close the deal.

It wasn't until turn 4 when eSorscha, left with one hit, stole victory from the jaws of defeat.  OK.  That is really dramatic and like most games of Warmachine/Hordes it was just down to the dice.  I was able to do the final 4 points of damage and steal a win.

Nate was a great opponent and will be running the Warmachine/Hordes events at NOVA.  I have to do the plug because I committed to playing 40k and I really should have asked Nate about the Warmachine/Hordes schedule because he said they are adding more games.  Which is awesome!  He even said there will be a game for traitors like me that want to play the GT and play Warmachine/Hordes.  There will also be plenty of space for pickup games.

I promise to start keeping better battle records.  I didn't think of it until after the first round.  It was a good prep for the league.

Privateer Press: New League

Looks like Privateer Press is preparing for the 2012 season with a new league, War-torn Alliances.  Not a lot of details on their site except for some pics of the packet.  I know that Dream Wizards will be hosting a league with Beltway Gamers.

Here is the info from Privateer Press.

With but a stroke, a world almost ended

Last night,I started messing with putting a decal on the Emperor's Champion.  I had it on and set except for a tiny spot at the top.  Today my decal set arrived from Amazon and I thought, "I can put a little on the top and put it in place."  Nope...it took the decal off and a lot of the whit on the shoulder.  I tried brushing a few layers and besides taking too long it was on even.  I almost wept.

I pulled out the trust airbrush.  Put some white in it.  Lowered the PSI and went to town.  After 40 minutes.  I had the shoulder looking like new and the world has returned to it's prior state of order.

Lesson: Follow directions and seal the mini prior to getting fancy.  I am not a skilled pro and messing up drives me crazy.  This is a hobby I want to grow in.  While mistakes happen, being sloppy will ruin your fun.  Don't rush kiddies!

I managed to get some priming down.  I have the bodies of primed of several space marines and the drop pod doors.  What did I forget?  I never glued any heads on the marines.  Today was not the day to work on minis.

Tomorrow is another day.

WIP: Black Templar Bases

I started working on the bases for my Emperor's Champion and Initiates.  I am using the cork and sand method explained by BUYPAINTED.com.  I wanted it to look like stone on the cheap and I think his method is the cheapest and looks the best.  Todd (SinCain) uses it with great success on his Blood Angels.

The cork is glued on the base and sand is applied with white glue.

I then airbrush them in black.

I drybrushed the base with Fortress Grey

The model is just to show what a model would look like on the base.

40k 6e Leak?!

Unless you live under a rock or don't care but someone posted what is supposed to be the new 6e rules for Warhammer 40k.  I have not read them nor will I.  I will read the posts from most of the major blog sites for their read on it.  Not that it's not interesting but between the cold I am fighting and the fact that it's a lot of effort for something that may be a really good hoax.

Look at Kirby or BoLS for their analysis.

Black Templar Army: The Confluence Crusade

"They win because they deal in punishment the way the
foundries used to deal in molten metal and sparks."

I have been working the past week on my BT.  I have came up for a name of the Crusade.  I choose the Confluence Crusade because of the theme.  The theme was the black and gold of my favorite football team, The Steelers (I know they got bounced but even the might fall sometimes).  Heinz Field is on the confluence of the three rivers.

I am working in all the fluff but I have been working on the Emperor's Champion.  Below are some pics of the beginning of the paint job.  I hope you all enjoy.

Secret Weapon Miniature Bases: Slime Time Part 3

Here is two bases I finished.  The bottom was the one from the video.  The top was the newest I did.  The bottom took about 4  pours.  The top took one pour.  Pretty impressive.

WIP: Saxon Orik

Finished Saxon Orik up finally and started work on the Emperor's Champion.  Below are some of the pics of Saxon.

Wet Base didn't turnout how I would have liked it.

Secret Weapon Miniature Bases: Slime Time Part 2

Here is the final part of how I do the slime effect on my Cryx bases.  You can change the ink color and get the same effect.  Secret Weapon Miniatures used red ink to make blood for the Khorne Berserker. Hope you enjoy it.

Secret Weapon Miniature Bases: Slime Time Part 1

This  is my first attempt at doing a video using my iPhone.  Let me appologize for the quality.  It is also my first time doing this but I figured it was easier to show everyone.  Let me know what you think!

Clean Yo Brush and Other News

I planned to start a "how to Cryx-afy bases" segment today but I got a little side tracked.  I got everything started.  I painted three bases and snapped a few pics then started working on Saxon Orik.  Took a few pictures and didn't like what the pics showed me.  Worked some more and then took some pics of the Emperor's Champion.  I noticed a section under his backpack that wasn't primed.

So I used the trusty airbrush to fix it.  That is when I noticed the crud resting inside.  I spent a good 30 minutes breaking down and cleaning the airbrush.  Now it is all cleaned.

Here is what is on the agenda for this weekend:

  • Finish Saxon Orik
  • Work on the bases and get one done to show the steps on how to make them
  • Prime the drop pod sections for the Black Templar army.
  • Work on the Emperor's Champion
  • Develop the back story for my Black Templars
  • Maybe put some guys together at GW while the kids are out and about

WIP: Black Templar and Sixth Edition

In between actually doing stuff required for survival (i.e keeping the wife happy), I have been reading up on my latest project: Black Templar.  I have two main things I need to finish prior to starting.  I will have the bulk of the Cryx bases painted and prepared to be slimed.  I will also have Saxon Orik finished.  He is on the base now and I need to finish his sheath, skin/face and touch ups.

I was reading over at "Another Army Blog" and he was talking about an army a year.  He picked an existing army, designed and built the army.  I love the idea.  I was thinking about it and will do almost nothing but work on my BT this year.  The only exception is basing and working on my Khador and Cryx since they are purchased and almost put together.  I also have a few DE pieces I need to assemble for the Dream Wizards Team Tournament.  I figure the focus will be hard but if I break it up with the stuff I need to finish from my WM and existing armies I should be able to get past the ADD.

Then comes 6th edition....

NOVA: The Great Flip-Flop

I decided to do the 40k GT at NOVA. The reasoning is simple: the experience. I love Warmachine and I could have found partners for the 3 man team and built a 50pt army but there is the experience.

I loved Blobs even though I missed the final match due to a migraine and finished dead last. It was fun. I doubt it will be that fun mainly because the stress level and hype. I think the experience will still be amazing.

I will lose the first round and have the remaining rounds to chill. I am also very excited about nighthammer. The DC Narrative sounds cool.

Next is what to play. I will probably do a flavor of Space Marines. This will probably be a good place to do my count as Black Templar army (I need to pick a name for them). I will keep all posted.

NOVA Con

I started registering for NOVA. I know I want to register for the 40k narrative game but I am waiting till February when they release the details. Sounded cool but don't want to commit till I know more.

I may skip Warmachine unless I can find two more players to justify the cost. If I skip, I will be adding signing up for 40k and just doing some WM pick up games.
