Warhammer 40k: How to spend 4 hours in the ER or BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD

Yesterday, The Chaos Gods giveth.  My chaos dreads and Stormeagle arrived.  Nothing from the Chaos Gods comes without a price.  The Stormeagle has some issues with bent resin.  Not a problem.   Just requires time and patience.

Yet, not all the Chaos Gods were happy with the minor issues.  Khorne required blood.  While working on the resin hull of the Stormeagle, there are three pieces of flash.  I used clippers but still needed to get some of it off.  How does one do that?  With a dremel (since it was at an odd angle that snips couldn't get).  But I had an x-acto knife in my hand.  Just cut the resin.  It's easy.

It was easy.  I sliced the bit off and then cut my finger.  It bled like a stuck pig.  I cut two vessels and fractured my knuckle.  I spent 4 hours in the ER in the middle of the night.

I make light of it now with my little joke about Chaos Gods and all that but what I did was boneheaded.  I should took the few minutes to get the right tool for the job.  Kiddies.  Be smart and be careful.

I will say one thing.  The Stormeagle is gonna look great.

Lastly, below are links to the damage.  I didn't want to gross out anyone who might be squeamish.  The PA did a nice job but my career as a hand model is officially over.

Warhammer 40k: Confluence Crusade

Did the initial black and yellow airbrushing on my remaining Razorbacks and speeders. A few minor issues. Had some overspray on the window armor and a few spots where the paint and primer came off. Nothing that can't be easily fixed. In fact, they are in the perfect spot for battle damage.

I wonder how bad my list will be destroyed with 6th ed. At least everything is primed and the painting can begin.

Warhammer 40k: Gone Missing

I had the GW page where the main rule book is and it's not there anymore.   Looks like the countdown to 6th ed is ramping up.  NOTE: AOBR is still there.

Warhammer 40k: Soon?!

Today, I am finishing putting together my vehicles for my Black Templar army while listening to Turn 8 from Beasts of War.  They are doing their "Farewell to 5th Edition".  Then I see this.

To sum it up, Faeit 212 says that GW released a letter to their stores to remove 5th edition tonight and from the web Monday.  Customers are to be told something big will be happening soon.  There will be a store meeting mid-June to discuss the event. One of the guys from BWG mentioned seeing a rumor that 6/30 was the date.

Take with a pinch of salt but BoW has been doing a lot of talking like this prior to other releases. I think it is soon.

Warmachine Journeyman League: The End

Yesterday marked the end of the Journeyman League.  I didn't win the League I did win most paint points.  I had a blast and really enjoyed painting up my undead machines.  I learned a lot during the process and really love Cryx.  I am use to people having disdain for me in general and it was nice to hear a collective groan from other tables when pDenny used her feat.

Below are pics of the Wraith Engine I finally finished Tuesday.

Warhammer 40k: Flyers and Price Increases

Well it looks like the Summer of Flyers is actually happening and I am slightly let down.  I was planning on buy a flyer for my Ultramarine and BT armies just for the fun of it.  That was before I took a closer look at the picture on BoLS and saw the WD says for Codex: Space Marines.  Here is the link but the picture says, "Offical Update to Codex Space Marines on page 66."  That's a bummer and puts it lower on my purchase list.

Frontline Gaming wrote a neat OpEd piece about the price increase and market factors. It's written in normal English and doesn't require an MBA to understand it.  I think they wrote it that way so GW can understand it since it's obvious business is not their strong point.

The problem I have with the price increase is it reduces my desire to buy more directly from GW.  GW has done some bonehead moves in the past to reduce the impact of independent retailers on their bottom line.  You cannot advertise a lower price online than GW retail price.  You cannot use a shopping cart for online sales of GW (something to that effect).  These things have often drove my late night spur of the moment purchases to Privateer Press.

Last Thanksgiving, I was flush with some PayPal cash.  Miniature Market and The Warstore both had sales.  The Warstore also dicounted their GW mechandise to about the same price as Miniature Market.  The problem is I didn't feel like contacting them for an updated price list and generate an order (NOTE: Both stores would have been happy for me to call them during business hours and sell me GW stuff but I was lazy).  What did I do?  I purchased a Cryx army which I just painted.  That was a nice chunk of chain.

Looking at GW's strategy to just go after new players with disposable income, I can see a lot more deals on eBay and Craig's List for armies.  Kids that buy a bunch and then want to sell inorder to buy their next new thing. People with money buy them on the cheap.  GW is missing out on a lot of sales in the same way the video game market hurts from used game sales.

Read the Frontline Gaming article and let me know what you all think.

Warhammer 40k: Almost Done with 40k!

The title is a dramatic for effect.  I read a nice article on 3++ about the conversion from 4e to 5e and the pain it was.  With 6e coming out in July, I plan to stop playing 5e after the DW tournament June 9th.  This way I can start to forget what I have learned about 5th edition and begin with as blank of a slate as I can.  Shouldn't be that hard.

I do plan on working on my Black Templar to finish them early and then begin to work on the Chaos stuff I have been purchasing.  I picked up three FW dreads (Thousand Sons, Alpha Legion, and Black Legion), have a Storm Eagle that should be here soon and plan on picking up a decimator.

I managed to get two games in this weekend.  A quick 1500 point game against Space Marines and a 2000 point battle against Space Wolves.

The Space Marine battle featured Matt playing with the Ultramarine Chapter Master and a LR (500 points in a IC and his ride).  Besides playing against me, Matt also had to contend with his dice.  It was table corners and three objectives.  Two on Matt's side and one on my side.  Matt kept it close but his dice and my Vindicators were right on.  I lost two initiates and a Razorback. I won the match 1 -0.

The Space Wolves wasn't so pretty.  We were playing NOVA missions with objectives being win scenario.  After a brutal first round where I almost lost both squads of terminators, I started at least doing damage.  It was an uphill battle that I lost horrificly.  4-1 Todd.

Warmachine Journeyman League: Week 5 - She ain't dead yet

This is almost the last week.  I came out with my 35 point list and got one game in against Q, a Circle player.  This was both of our first game with a few of the pieces.  There were a few notable highlights.
  • Having my Bane Thralls marked as prey then losing two only to have the Bane Lord kill them back into place
  • Forgetting to put a soul token on my Pistol Wraith
  • pDenny's feat is a beast
  • Venom away trees and anything else that poses a threat
  • The Bane Lord dies quick when people want him gone (which is often)
It was a victory for me but I need to use my arc nodes better.  The Bane Thralls with UA are beast.  I made 60% of my Tough checks with them which made the difference from losing 2 or losing 5.

Another nice move was backing all of my Thralls out of combat so the Bane Lord could Thresher 3 hunters (killing 2).

The match ended when pDenny moved in to venom the Circle Warlock several times during her feat turn.  Q moved his lock in for the kill and realized two things: A)pDenny's feat does hamper a lot of attacks, B)pDenny is not undead and he doesn't get the extra die needed to crush her.  He got her down to 50% but he only had two points left himself.  He was a great opponent and didn't make me roll my hits on the next attacks.

BoLS: GW Price Hike?!?

Bell of Lost Souls is doing a PSA to remind everyone that June is GW customer appreciation month which means that they will be raising their prices.  Looks like I will be buying some of my Chaos items early and possibly holding off on my Forgeworld order.

I think this is particular amusing this time around since Privateer Press reduced the price of their new plastic minitures since material and manufacturing is so much cheaper.

Warmachine Journeyman: The Rogue Alchemist, Bane Lord and Wraith

Been working on a bunch of things for the Journeyman League.  Gorman was finished last week and I started working on a bunch of other Cryx models.  The UA for my Bane Thralls, the Bane Lord Tartarus and the Wraith Enginge.

Let me say that the Wraith Engine is a pain to build.  The piping doesn't line up and the resin doesn't give even in hot water.  That being said I am happy with him so far.  I more or less followed the Wrath guide for painting him so far.  There are some things I did differently but I think it was just so I can get him done.

Below are pics of everything.

Warmachine Journeyman: Week 4 - Ode to the airbrush

Today is my normal day to game at Dream Wizards.  Unfortunately, today was also the day of my daughters sprince concert.  I found out about this afternoon after I drove to the metro near DW.  I had to leave work early to beat traffic and make it in time to go to the event.

The day wasn't a total loss.  I went home and drilled the pin holdes in the arm of my Wraith Engine.  I didn't want to go ahead and start on the Bane Thralls or finish the eyes on Gorman.  Instead, I decided to break out the airbrush and work on my wreck markers.  In about 30 minutes, I did the models below:

THE END TIMES!! Plus some more random hobby junk.

The end is nearing for 5th edition of Warhammer 40k. Flyers on June 6th look to be the last release before 5th edition ends and the 6th rises.  You can't go to any board without hearing gloom and doom.  The world is ending.

I don't think it's that bad but I do think that it may screw things up a bit.  I look at the bag that holds my templar and I wonder if any of my lists will be usable for NOVA if tey move that way.  If they aren't will I have enough time to recover or will I be looking at a painful weekend of drinking to drown my sorrows?  Either way I will have fun.

The last of my BT army arrives this week with a nice Deathjack for my Cryx army.  While I am loving finishing the Cryx army, I am chopping at the bit to work on either my BT or Chaos.  The new bases I ordered for the Chaos army have arrived.  I know I need to finish the army but the alure of the dark gods are calling.

I have managed to Gorman di Wulfe, Rogue Alchemist painted this evening.  While it was a rush job, I think he turned out good.  I need to do some more shading but he is playable.  The rest of this week will be to get the Ban Thralls started, build and prime my Wraith Engine, Wraith Shadow Combine,
Bane Lord Tartarus, pGaspy, and Bane Thrall UA.  It looks like a lot but it shouldn't take me too long to get them set. I should have close to two 35 pt armies painted.  Not bad.  Not bad at all.
After the league is done, I have to start getting ready for the Dream Wizards 2000 point tournament.  I plan on getting my butt handed to me.  The players there are good.  Some of the areas best.  If I can win one match, I will be lucky.  It will be a good learning experience for NOVA.

Warmachine Journeyman: Create Desire

Finished up the Warwitch Sirens this weekend.  They were fun and I think I did better with painting the cloth.  The armor I need to work on.  I don't think I will have I will have all 35 pts painted before the end of the month.  I do think I will have the bulk done though.

I ordered a Deathjack and that should arrive on Thursday.  I should have that built in time for the final week.  That should be fun to send crushing into infantry.

Here are some pics of the Warwitch Sirens.

Warhammer 40k: Confluence Crusade and Chaos Update

It has been awhile since I did any update.  Truthfully, the only work I have done was washing the resin fronts and sides for the Black Templar Razorbacks.  I haven't done much and won't do much till around the 24th of this month.  I am working to complete the Cryx Army and want to actually get everything painted and built.  That doesn't mean I stopped buying for it.  In fact, I have made the final purchase for it today.  I ordered the last two Razorbacks I needed.

I purchased two of the old Chaos Rhinos from a guy on the Beltway Gamers site.  I built one last weekend and will build the other tonight.  I am playing a 40k team game and will be teaming with another Choas player.  This way I will have nothing but Chaos minis for the match.  I also purchased 3 old Obliterators since they were a good buy on ebay.

Looking at some of the rumors for Chaos have me pretty stoked on them but I also like the idea of the new Space Marine flyer.  Then there is 6th edition which people are saying will be out July 7th but who knows.

I am slowly ramping back up into the 40k mindset.  I think 6th will be a big deal for good or bad.  I can't help but be excited for it.

Warmachine Journeyman: Week Three Wrap-up

This was a cool week.  I managed to get three games in and true to form I didn't take any pics or do battle reports but here is the recap as I remember it.

The Mik - Menoth - Victory (Assassination) : The Mik is a great opponent.  Very happy and goes with the flow.  This was a 15 point match since I missed last week.  I ran:

Warwitch Deneghra

He ran the standard Battle box with some extra guy that gave jacks he was in B2B with an extra action.  He managed to wreck shop on my jacks.  What won the game was pDenny charging with full focus.

I ran this list for my next two matches:

Warwitch Deneghra
Bane Thralls (Leader and 5 Grunts)
Pistol Wraith
Pistol Wraith
Warwitch Siren
Warwitch Siren

Nate - Cygnar Siege - Loss (Assassination): This was an epic battle.  Much better than our first meeting.  Some highlights were don't pop Siege's feat when pDenny's feat is active unless you are close enough to account for the loss of focus.  I dodged a big bullet on that.  Using the WWS sirens to run enemy troops into their own AOE is funny.

The game came down to one roll.  I had to charge a Bane Thrall through a POW 10 AOE and then roll a 7 to win.  I made it through the AOE and then rolled a 6 to hit.  Nate had to charge with Siege and do the same thing and he succeeded.

Wilson - Some Epic Skorn Guy - Victory (Killbox)/Loss(Assassination): I know this week we weren't supposed to use epics but I like Wilson.  Wilson played like a Cryx caster and hung back.  At his turn in round 3, I said your out of the killbox.  He measured and he was.  Victory.

We kept playing it out.  The Bane Thralls did their job and wrecked shop.  I can't wait till I can get the UA and character for them.   I made a rookie mistake and left pDenny out in the open and he rushed her with his warlock and took her out.  Fun game.

The pistol wraiths haven't impressed me.  I like the WWS.  I am still learning and will need to get some more games under my belt to get the feel but so far I am liking it.
